3 more succumb to Covid, Ganjam death toll now 70
Berhampur: Deaths due to Covid-19 has touched 70 in Ganjam district with three more deaths reported on Friday. The infection tally crossed the 7,000-mark and touched 7,634 with a record single day spike of 732 cases.
Over 25% of the Covid patients have been reported in the last five days. Altogether 1,643 cases were reported in the last three days while 2,107 patients were detected in the last five days.
The district administration attributed the rise in numbers to the aggressive door-to-door survey leading to the identification of cases in the initial stage. “This is the main reason behind the huge jump in cases in the last few days and there is no reason to worry,” said collector (Ganjam) Vijay Amruta Kulange in a press meet.
Early identification of Covid-19 patients is good for the patient and his/her family as it will restrict further infection, he said, while appealing to people to come forward to disclose the symptoms. Around 200 health teams are engaged in the survey. He said the number of deaths in the district is more as people are not coming forward for the tests that has resulted in the last-minute rush to hospitals and even deaths.
Among the three deaths reported of Friday, there was a woman and two men aged 44 and 59. They died while undergoing treatment at the Covid hospital, official sources said.
Kulange also said the number of positive cases would soon reduce drastically. He said 30 villages, earlier marked as red zones have now being marked as green zones after no new case was detected in the past two weeks. “This was due to the administration focusing on the village to contain the spread of the virus,” he said, adding that 85% of the villages in the district have been marked as green zones.
“We have evolved our own model involving the community to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The Ganjam model to contain the Covid-19 will surely succeed,” said commissioner, Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC), Chakravarthi Singh Rathore.
The district’s first Covid case was detected on May 2 when two persons returned from Surat.
