6 dead, 40 injured as bus from Bengal overturns in Odisha

Berhampur: Six persons were killed and another 40 injured when a bus carrying more than 70 tourists from West Bengal overturned in Ganjam district, late on Tuesday. Among the dead were four women, two of them from the same family.
“The bus was travelling from Daringbadi in Kandhamal district to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh when the accident took place at about 12.30 am,” Ganjam superintendent of police Brijesh Rai said.
The incident happened near Kaling ghat under Bhanjanagar police station limits. Police suspect the driver lost control while negotiating the sharp bends on the way down from Daringbadi. The vehicle hit an electric pole and one of the front wheels caught fire before the bus overturned. Police and firefighters from Bhanjanagar and R. Udayagiri in Kandhamal district reached the spot and broke the window panes to rescue the injured passengers.
The deceased were identified as Supiya Denre (33), Sanjeet Patra (33), Rima Denre (22) and her mother Mausumi Denre (44), and Barnali Manna (34), all from Sultanpur in Howrah district. Swapan Gushait, a 44-year-old cook from Gopalpur in Hooghly district, was the other victim, the police said.
