AIIMS to start kidney transplants from July

Bhubaneswar: AIIMS Bhubaneswar will start kidney transplantation surgery from July. The institution has already received permission from the Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DMET) of the state government to start the procedure.
Sachidananda Mohanty, medical superintendent of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said they have a complete setup in the hospital to start kidney transplant.
“DMET has given approval for this and we have trained manpower for the procedure. We are expecting our first case by July 15,” he added. He said doctors from two departments — nephrology and urology — will play vital roles in the surgeries.
“Other departments including pathology, biochemistry and trained staff for blood transfusion will also help the doctors. While the nephrology department has two doctors, the urology department has four doctors,” he added.
He said the facility will help many patients with kidney failure from Odisha and its neighbouring states. “Our institute has developed the required infrastructure for this purpose to serve the people,” he added.
The nephrology department was opened in 2018. OPD service was started in September of that year.
The institute has been providing dialysis to patients since 2019. Kidney patients are also getting plasmapheresis, CRRT and renal biopsy services here, official sources said.
