Bijay Mohanty passes away

Veteran Odia actor Bijay Mohanty, who had been unwell for the past few months, passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar this evening. He was 70. He had suffered a heart attack in May while visiting his daughter in Hyderabad and was undergoing treatment there till his family shifted him to Bhubaneswar in June.

He had since been discharged from hospital here, but his health deteriorated this evening. “He was rushed to the hospital this evening but we couldn’t revive him despite trying our best,” said a doctor of the hospital.
Film researcher Suryo Deo, who was close the late actor, said Mohanty’s condition was deteriorating since the past few weeks. “As he preferred to be treated at home, the hospital released him and arranged home nursing. But this evening, his condition became worse,” he said.
As the news of his death spread, a pall of gloom descended on the Odia film, television and theatre fraternity. His colleagues and fans mourned the actor, who had made his screen debut in the Odia film Chilika Teerey in 1977. He was an alumnus of the National School of Drama and a contemporary of late Bollywood actor Om Puri.
