BSCL to build bridge, revamp Bhubaneswar lake
BHUBANESWAR: There is good news for the residents of Satya Nagar and Saheed Nagar in the city. Separated by a natural lake, that has unfortunately been turned into a veritable sewer, they will soon be able to walk across the other side with a 50-metre-long footbridge set to be built over the lake to connect the two posh localities.
Proposed to be built under the smart city project, the bridge will come up over the natural lake (zone-1), which flows from near the Satyanagar crematorium up to the railway tracks at Bomikhal. According to the plan, the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) will first renovate the lake and beautify the southern side (Satya Nagar) with proper roads, plantations, amusement parks, eateries, pedestrian paths and a cycle track. The lake will flow on the northern side (along Saheed Nagar). Initially, the BSCL will spend Rs 15 crore to revive the lake by taking up cleaning and dredging work and removing the illegal encroachments.
“Before we start work in full swing, we have to clear the encroachments that have narrowed the natural course of the lake. So far, we have removed 70% of the encroachments. The revamped lake will have clean water round the year. Dumping sewerage will not be allowed. We have discussed the matter with the department concerned,” BSCL CEO Sanjay Kumar Singh said.
