Covid-19 positive cases in Odisha cross 50,000, deaths touch 305

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha‘s Covid-19 tally crossed 50,000 on Wednesday after 1,876 more tested positive for the virus. With nine more deaths, the Covid-19 death toll in the state rose to 305.
The 1,876 new positive cases reported on Wednesday is the highest single-day spike so far even as the state tested the highest ever 32,053 samples in the past 24 hours. The total number of positive cases rose to 50,672. “The high number is due to more tests done. The positivity rate is 5.8%, less than the state’s all-time average positivity rate of around 7%,” said Jayant Panda, government’s technical adviser on Covid-19.
Bulk of the new positive cases was reported from Khurda (297), Ganjam (260), Sundargarh (119), Cuttack (109), Nayagarh (105), Rayagada (98), Koraput (77), Gajapati (71) and Mayurbhanj (70). The state now has 15,508 active positive cases while 34,801 have recovered.
The new deaths include the highest four from Ganjam, two from Rayagada and one each from Angul, Balasore and Khurda. Two men both aged 57 and two women aged 48 and 74 died in Ganjam. The death toll in Ganjam increased to 144. Two men both aged 65 years died in Rayagada. A man aged 38 years in Balasore and another 58 years in Khurda besides a woman (44) in Angul died of the virus, the health department said.
