BERHAMPUR: A constable sustained injuries after a dog attacked him when a liquor trader allegedly set his pet canine on policemen during a raid at his house and outlet in Sandhamula village, under Kodala police station limits of Ganjam district on Saturday evening.
Jagannath Behera’s left hand was badly bitten by the dog, a black Labrador. He had to be taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Sources said four policemen went to the village after getting information that Rabi Nahak was selling chicken and liquor during the weekend shutdown in the district. Seeing the police, Nahak and his sons started throwing stones at them.
“They also tried to attack our men with sharp-edged weapons,” said Dipti Ranjan Behera, officer in-charge of Beguniapada police outpost.
When the police tried to search his outlet, the dog started barking and did not allow the police enter. Then one of the accused set the animal free and it attacked the policemen, Behera added.
While one of the policemen sustained injuries, the others fled. Several villagers have complained to the police that the dog had bitten some locals earlier as well, the police said.
The accused fled from the spot. A case has been registered against them under different sections of IPC include attempt to murder.
Later, police carried out a raid on Nahak’s house and outlet and seized at least 350 litres of country-made liquor and around 50 litres of foreign liquor, besides two axes and a sharp weapon with which they had tried to attack the policemen, Behera said. Police are on the lookout for Nahak and his sons. Meanwhile, the constable is said to be stable.
