Goons attack Sailashree Vihar man, 2nd such case in 10 days

BHUBANESWAR: Two armed miscreants attacked an engineer with a sword near his home in Sailashree Vihar here on Wednesday.
“I was plucking flowers along the road near my house when two bike-borne men stopped near me. Since it was early morning, there were no people in the area. One of the men brandished a sword at me and attacked me,” said Satya Narayan Mishra, the engineer.
Mishra resisted the attack. “I was bleeding. Still, I caught hold of the sword and raised an alarm. The miscreants left by dropping the weapon. I suspect they wanted to rob me,” he said.
This is the second such incident in Sailashree Vihar under Chandrasekharpur police limits in the past 10 days. Besides, snatchers have already committed at least 30 offences in different parts of the city in the past two months.
Chandrasekharpur locals blamed police inaction for the rise in such crimes. “Whenever we call the local inspector and urge him to intensify patrolling in our area, he does not respond. Snatchings are on the rise here. On October 20, an elderly woman was robbed of her chain outside her home in Sailashree Vihar. Nobody has been arrested still,” said Padmalaya Mishra, a resident of the area. “We suspect the involvement of anti-socials of a nearby slum. Efforts are being made to identify the gang members,” a police officer said.
Under fire over a spate of snatchings and robberies, commissionerate police recently asked police stations to maintain a register of habitual offenders who are out on bail. “We have strengthened the existing system that requires bailed habitual offenders to appear in police stations regularly and sign the register. This will help us keep tabs on criminals,” deputy commissioner of police, Uma Shankar Dash, said.
