Govt may allow old vehicles for ITI practicals

BHUBANESWAR: If everything goes as planned, the old and unused vehicles of different government departments will come in use for the students of the industrial training institutes (ITIs) for their practical training.
The state transport department has decided to offer the condemned vehicles at a cheaper price to the government-owned ITIs, polytechnic and diploma institutes for the benefit of their students. Currently, the discarded vehicles of the government departments are being auctioned.
“The transport department took the decision after the earning from the auction process was poor. The auction of the unused vehicles has been fetching very little money,” a senior transport official said.
“The use of old vehicles by the students was under active consideration for quite some time. Now, we have decided to materialize the plan,” the senior official added.
The department said the state-owned technical colleges which impart courses in automobile, mechanical and mechanic motor vehicle, among others, can procure the unused vehicles from their concerned district administrations.
“We will fix a base or offset price depending on the type of vehicle (light or heavy motor). The appropriate authorities of different government offices, agencies and undertakings will first inform the polytechnic colleges in their respective districts about the availability of the unused vehicles. If the colleges do not procure the vehicles within 30 days from the offer, we will go for the tender and auction process,” the officer said.
Sources said most institutes currently purchase the old vehicles from scrap dealers to arrange practice lessons for their students. “We will be happy to procure the unused government vehicles if we get them at a cheaper rate than the market price,” Pragyan Mohanty, lecturer of a polytechnic college here, said.
