Maoists call bandh on Friday
Berhampur: Suspected Maoists have called a bandh in Odisha and eastern Chhattisgarh on Friday in protest against the alleged atrocities of police and the CRPF. Posters appealing to people to support the bandh surfaced at various places under the Baliguda and Tumudibandha police station limits in Odisha’s Kandhamal district on Wednesday.
Written in Odia, these posters called for stringent action against the police for its alleged involvement in the murder of a Maoist sympathsizer, Mukund Kanhar. They were reportedly put up by the Kandhamal-Kalahandi, Boudh, Nayagarh (KKBN) division of the Maoists.
Panic gripped the area following the resurfacing of such posters after February, when a 20-year-old man was killed in an IED blast believed to be triggered by the Maoists at Kiamunda in the same district.
“We are investigating the genuineness of the posters and banners,” a senior police officer said. The Maoist call for bandh has put the state police on alert in the district. TNN
