MKCG critical heart surgery dept running without a doc
Berhampur: MKCG Medical College and Hospital’s cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS) department has been non-functional due to the absence of a specialised doctor since 2019, following the retirement of its sole professor.
Patients, who came to the 20-bedded department, seeking the specialised heart surgery, had to either opt for a private facility or go outside the state for treatment. All sophisticated equipment that the department received under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Surakshya Yojana also lie unused.
At present, patients with lower life risks are being treated at the hospital’s general surgery department, while the critical cases referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, said a senior doctor. “We will urge the state government to depute a cardiothoracic doctor to MKCG. He/she can handle the critical cases for at least two to three days a week here,” said MKCG principal Dr Abani Kant Mishra. “All other six super-specialty departments of the college have sufficient number of doctors,” he added.
