No impact of Bharat Bandh in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Members of several dalit, tribal, backward class, minority community and their organisations here on Wednesday staged demonstrations at many places of the state demanding caste-based census and other facilities. There was no impact of Bharat Bandh on business and other establishments and vehicle movement in the state.
The Bharat Bandh call was given by the All India Backward and minority communities employees’ federation (BAMCEF) and other outfits of backward classes as a mark of protest against the Centre for not conducting a caste-based census for the Other Backward Classes (OBC).
In Odisha, the Rashtriya Pachhua Varg Morcha (RPVM) was taking the lead of the Bharat Bandh with the help of Bharat Mukti Morcha, Rashtriya Adivasi Ekta Parishad, Bharatiya Vidyarthi Morcha, Bahujan Kranti Morcha, Rashtriya Mulnivasi Mahila Sangh, Republic Party of India (RPI), Bhim Army and All Odisha Scheduled Caste Federation.
Normally shops, business houses and offices get affected due to Bharat Bandh, but this time everything was normal like any other days. Picketing was not seen in the capital streets on Wednesday. Vehicles were plying as usual.
RPVM state president Jagdish Yadav said they have staged demonstration at different places of the state including Vani Vihar square at Bhubaneswar, several places of Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Ganjam.
“Besides caste-based census, we demand reservations for the SC/ST/OBC communities in the private sector, resumption of the old pension scheme, protection of labour rights and no displacement of tribal people, a guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) for farmers, and implementation of a separate electorate in OBC reservation in Panchayat polls in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh,” he added.
They also protested the use of EVMs during elections and the issue of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Population Register (NPR).
