Odisha: IMD issues rain alert for 4 to 5 days
BHUBANESWAR: The state government on Saturday asked district collectors to remain alert in the wake of IMD’s forecast of heavy rain to be caused by the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday.
The IMD forecast said the low pressure would trigger rain for four to five days, mostly in southern Odisha and parts of northern Odisha. Fisherman have been advised against venturing into the sea.
“The situation may be closely monitored. Districts under orange and yellow warning must remain prepared to meet any waterlogging or localised flood-like situation including in urban areas,” said special relief commissioner (SRC), P K Jena, in his advisory to the collectors.
Director of the regional IMD centre, H R Biswas, said the fresh low pressure would cause widespread rainfall. “Light to moderate rain or thunder showers may occur in most places over south and many places over north Odisha on Sunday. There is yellow warning of heavy to very heavy rain in five districts of Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Gajapati. There are chances of heavy rain in five more districts, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Ganjam, Balangir and Bargarh,” the IMD said.
The IMD’s rainfall report of the past 24 hours recorded on Saturday morning said Remuna in Balasore district had received the highest rain of 87 mm in the state. The city received 6.7 mm rainfall.
