Odisha: Over 2.14 lakh to vote in 294 booths in Brajrajnagar bypoll
BHUBANESWAR: Altogether 2.14 lakh voters will exercise their franchise at 279 booths during the forthcoming Brajrajnagar assembly byelection scheduled on May 31. Eleven candidates are in the fray.
Chief electoral officer SK Lohani said 319 ballot units, an equal number of control units and 419 VVPATs have been kept ready for the byelection.
About 1,396 polling personnel will be engaged for the smooth conduct of the election. They will be dispersed from Jharsuguda a day before the bypoll. The strongroom is likely to be set up at Jharsuguda town.
Lohani further said as many as 325 voters, including persons with disabilities and people with more than 80 years in the constituency, are eligible to cast their votes through postal ballots under special arrangement. Special polling parties, micro-observers and videographer are being arranged to collect votes from these 325 voters from their respective homes.
A total of 380 vehicles will be engaged for the transportation of polling parties and other election activities. To ensure a free and fair election, strict enforcement measures are being adopted by both police and excise officials. A helpline number 1950 has also been floated for the benefit of the citizens and to receive information of illegal activities, Lohani said.
The CEO said total three companies of central para-military forces will be deployed to ensure the safety of polling booths and strongrooms. Besides, sixty-one micro-observers will also be deployed while arrangements are being made for the live webcasting of polling of at least 50% booths and videography of certain booths.
