Odisha records 736 fresh Covid cases, 5 deaths; tally at 17, 437, toll touches 91

BHUBANESWAR: The Covid positive case continued to spiral up in the state with 736 people testing positive in the last 24 hours on Sunday, raising the total tally to 17, 437. Of the fresh cases, 481 logged from quarantine while 255 were local cases.
Five patients succumbed to the deadly virus, taking the toll to 91 in the state.
Among the deceased three persons were from the worst-hit Ganjam where total death due to the virus rose to 54 while the other two deaths reported from Sundargarh and Jagatsinghpur districts.
Covid-19 claimed a 70-year-old female, a 44-year-old male and a 39-year-old male who was suffering from diabetes, from Ganjam district. A 67-year old male from Jagatsinghpur suffering from diabetes and a 65-year-old female suffering from diabetes and bronchitis died.
Two other Covid patients including a 53-year-old male of Ganjam district died due to bradycardia, Hyperkalemia and metabolic acidosis, with history of chronic kidney disease and an 83-year old male of Bhubaneswar due to uncontrolled diabetes, acute kidney injury and metabolic acidosis also died due to reasons other than Covid, informed the health department.
With the highest number of 247 cases, Ganjam district topped the list with total 5527 positive cases followed by 107 cases detected from Khurda in the last 24 hours.
Besides, 45 cases reported from Koraput, 40 cases each from Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur, Gajapati (39), Balasore (33), Cuttack (27), Sambalpur (25), Angul(22), 18 from Malkangiri, 17 from Sundargarh, 14 from Puri, 12 from Mayurbhanj, 8 each from Rayagada and Boudh, 7 from Kendrapada, five from Bhadrak, four from Balangir, three from Bargarh, two from Kalahandi and one each from Dhenkanal and Nabarangpur.
The spurt in Covid cases has forced many district administration to impose localised lockdown and containment zone in respective areas to check the spread of the virus. Gajapati district administration imposed lockdown in all the block headquarters, 11 panchayats and two urban local bodies from July 20 midnight till July 31. Bhadrak municipality and Dhamnagar NAC in Bhadrak district also declared as containment zones and imposed lockdown till July 31.
Bargrh district headquarter hospital also closed for five days after doctors contracted the virus. Dhenkanal district authorities sealed five nursing homes in city after a pregnant woman admitted for child delivery tests positive.
The number of cases is likely to touch 30,000 in the state by July end, said Dr Jayant Panda, technical spokesperson of the health department.
“We may add 10,000 cases more by the end of this month while the equal number of cases will be recovered. We must not focus on the rising cases as the government has been ensuring advanced treatment facilities in the state. Our recovery rate is 67% and fatality rate is 0.5%, which is far better than the national average,” he added
As many as 515 more patients recovered and tested negative for the infection. The recovered cases of Odisha now rose to 12, 453 and 4865 active cases.
