Puri municipality asked to cover open drains in city
BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has asked the executive officer of Puri Municipality to take prompt and effective steps for covering the open drains under the municipality areas and submit an action taken report in the matter to the commission.
The rights panel passed this order on Thursday after hearing a petition filed by lawyer and rights activist Prabir Kumar Das regarding death of a poor rickshaw puller Nidhi Bhoi on May 17 night after falling into an open drain at Market Square on the Grand Road of Puri.
The petitioner had sought intervention of the commission to cover the open drains before the start of the rainy season. The commission has issued a notice to the executive officer of the Puri Municipality to submit a report on the issue by June 27.
