Rama Devi Women’s University’s students seek exam cancellation

BHUBANESWAR: Plus III students of Rama Devi Women’s University here have launched a campaign, demanding cancellation of their sixth semester examinations scheduled to be held on June 25 in view of the growing threat of novel coronavirus disease.
The students, through an online campaign, collected responses on whether to conduct or cancel the examinations and submitted the same to the university’s vice-chancellor and postgraduate council chairperson on Friday.
The students have collected more than a 1,000 responses through their online campaign out of which 72% have supported the cancellation of the examinations while the 27% backed rescheduling of the examinations.
The students have cited different reasons to cancel the examinations, including unavailability of transportation facilities, risk of getting exposed to the virus in the examination halls and difficulties to be faced by the students with disabilities.
“Many students, who are at home now, will have to come to take the examinations. They will face inconvenience in transportation. They might not be allowed to put up at private hostels here and face further problems,” Swikruti Mishra, a final year student of the university said.
“We have more than 15 students with vision impairment and they will definitely face problems availing of scribes. The university should realise the problems and take appropriate decision now,” Swikruti said. RD vice-chancellor Padmaja Mishra, however, said this is a ‘uniform’ decision taken by the higher education department and the examinations will be held according to the schedule.
“The transportation facilities are available right now and there will not be much problem for the students to reach the examination halls. The preparation is going on and exams will be held on time,” Mishra maintained.
