State maths institute to be a university

Bhubaneswar: The state government is planning to make the Institute of Mathematics and Application (IMA), Bhubaneswar, functioning under the science and technology department, into a full-fledged university.
“We will make the institution a great one. We have been trying very hard to make the institution a full-fledged university and a centre of excellence,” said science and technology minister Ashok Chandra Panda, while addressing the 23rd Foundation Day of the institution here on Friday. He said mathematics teachers from government schools will be brought to the IMA for training.
Director of the institute Jasobanta Jena urged the minister to make the institute a university for academic freedom and development of the institution. He also requested the department to take care of the institute’s needs to provide quality education to its students.
“If the state government upgrades the institute to a university in the future, it will help IMA open new courses, conduct a variety of research works and many more things. No need to take permission from the affiliating university for any new work. University status will solve many problems of our institution,” said Jena.
Former IMA director Swadhinananda Pattanaik said the institute should be upgraded into a university because academic freedom for an educational institution is important. “After getting the university tag, it will not depend on Utkal University for approvals. Publication of results is getting delayed because of this dependence.”
