Three held with brown sugar worth Rs 3 crore in Puri town
BHUBANESWAR: Police on Saturday seized around 3.2kg of brown sugar worth Rs 3 crore and arrested three youths in this connection at Mangalaghat Chhaka in Puri town. The gang’s kingpin is among those caught.
Based on reliable information, the police conducted a raid and nabbed the three drug suppliers — Susanta Pattanaik, Raj Kishore Sahoo and Manas Sahoo — all in their 20’s and residents of Kesharpur under the Kanas police station in Puri district. They have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Besides the contraband, the police seized Rs 20,000 cash, four mobile phones, a currency counting machine and a car from them.
SP (Puri) Kanwar Vishal Singh said they had been getting information about the drug suppliers’ movement in the town for the past three to four days. “After constantly monitoring their movement, we finally arrested them on Saturday morning,” he added.
He said Pattanaik, the kingpin of the racket, will be taken on remand for further questioning. The police are trying to get information from the three about the illegal trade and about people involved in the supply chain.
This year so far, police have seized 4.8kg brown sugar and arrested 33 peddlers in Puri. The WhatsApp helpline number, 773584886, of the anti-narcotics wing is functioning in the district, officials said.
