Tomato price hits a century again
Bhubaneswar: Tomato price has once again crossed Rs 100 per kg in the city markets after a gap of one week despite the hope that reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel would bring it down, Minati Singha reports.
Vendors said high demand, short supply and damage of tomato crop due to the soaring temperatures are behind the price heading north this year. Surge in mercury levels across the country and rain in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh has severely affected tomato production leading to the high prices of the kitchen essential. The rates are expected to come down only after the new harvest reaches the state.
“In the second week of May, the price of tomato had touched Rs 120 per kg in Bhubaneswar markets but it dropped to Rs 65-70 per kg last week. But once again the price has crossed Rs 100 in the retail market while it is selling at Rs 750 per quintal in the wholesale market,” said Kabiraj Swain, secretary of Unit-1 vegetable vendors association. Tomato comes to Bhubaneswar from Nashik and Latur in Maharashtra as well as Andhra.
