Veteran filmmaker Raju Mishra passes away

Veteran filmmaker and cinematographer Raj Gopal Mishra passed away this morning following a massive heart attack. He suffered the heart attack at his residence in Jatni on the city outskirts and despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, couldn’t be revived. He is survived by his wife and a son. He was 72.

The sudden demise of a multifaceted personality like Mishra, who handled cinematography, direction and music composition with equal elan, has left the Odia film and television fraternity in shock. Actor Sabyasachi Mishra remembered his first meeting with the filmmaker during a party after his first film, Pagal Premi. “He had praised my acting and showed genuine appreciation. But I could never get a chance to work with him,” he said. Manoj Mishra, too, rued about not getting a chance to work with him. Anu Choudhury, who had worked with Mishra in Hari Bhai Harena, said his demise would leave a void in the Odia film industry.
Mishra was an FTII alumnus and had worked as a cinematographer in various regional film industries as well as Bollywood. He had also composed music for a few films. He made his Odia film debut with Ulka (1981) as a cinematographer, director and music composer. The film went on to win Odisha State Film Awards in five categories. “Several Assamese films, with which he was associated in various capacities, have won National Awards,” said film researcher Surya Deo.
