Virus upsets plans, most Class X pass outs may stay back in state

BHUBANESWAR: With no improvement in the Covid situation in sight, most students who passed Class X have decided to continue their higher education in their own school or in institutions in the state itself. Similarly, several Class XII students have given up plans to study abroad.
Parents of the students are a worried lot, as uncertainty looms over the admission process and the conduct of entrance tests in the country. They are not in favour of sending their children to other countries or cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
Jyotiraditya Mohanty, who completed his Class XII this year from Sai International School here, has appeared for some online entrance tests and has been selected by three institutions, including a university in the UK. Although he got an admission offer from the University of York, he has decided not to leave the country.
“We do not know when the situation will become normal. The foreign university chosen by us has not even opened. It is teaching students online. So we decided to admit my son in a reputed management school in Mumbai for BBA course. If the situation gets better and institutions open gradually, my son can go abroad to study,” said Jyotiraditya’s mother Bandana Mohanty from Nayapalli.
Ritika Behera, a student of ODM Public School Bhubaneswar, who has secured 99.2 per cent in Class X CBSE examination, has decided to continue her higher studies in Bhubaneswar itself. “During the pandemic, it is better to keep our children with us. We have decided to admit her in a good institution in Bhubaneswar. We have good coaching institutions in Bhubaneswar and our educational institutes are doing well,” said Ritika’s father Rajat Kumar Behera.
Priya Somadatta Nayak, who also secured 99.2 per cent in Class X CBSE examination, said many students from Odisha go to Kota in Rajasthan for engineering or medical coaching. But students cannot go there due to this situation.
“Some of my friends are anxious to know when the JEE main and NEET examinations will start. They are also unsure about when the admission process will start in big public universities and national institutions. It is difficult for students like me to go to other cities during this time,” he added.
