Covid: All ICU beds full in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: The intensive care unit (ICU) beds in the two 500-bed Covid hospitals, KIMS and SUM, in Bhubaneswar were 100% occupied while the occupancy in general beds is around 70%, the government authorities said.
All the 45 ICU beds of SUM and 25 beds of KIMS were full. While the bed occupancy was 79.5% in KIMS, it was 68.6% in SUM.
State-wide, 126 patients were in ICU, 28 of them on ventilator support. Total number of ventilators available in state is 225 even as so far 12,526 have tested positive and 61 patients have died of Covid. The state has 4,087 active positive cases.
Government data sows bed occupancy is more than 90% Ganjam, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh. In six other districts of Khurda, Gajapati, Cuttack, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur and Mayurbhanj the occupancy is more than 50%. Statewide, around 40% of the hospital beds (2168 of the 5432) remain occupied while other active positive patients were in Covid care centres.
Amid the rising number of Covid-19 patients, the state government on Saturday approved more than 1,400 beds in and around the city, which will be functional from the next week.
Additional chief secretary (health) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said Neelachal Hospital will have 126 beds besides a 15-bed ICU. Besides, 1300 other beds will be available in Covid Care Centres (CCC) in three places. “Since these facilities will be run in public private partnership in already existing infrastructure, these would be available as early as Monday,” he said.
While 500 beds facility as a Covid Care Centre (CCC) will start at HI-Tech Medical College and Hospital here, the SUM Hospital will run a 500-bed facility at a Geriatric Centre building at Jatni and 300-bed CCC at Jamujhari open air jail. A vacant portion of the jail will be used as the CCC, government sources said. The government earlier had 22,340 Covid isolation beds including 5,432 beds in Covid hospitals and the rest in CCCs.
Government sources said the decision to create new facilities on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar at Jatni and Jamujhari was meant to reduce the load on the two Covid hospitals in city. Only asymptomatic and those with very mild symptoms will be kept in CCCs, government sources said.
