Covid toll inches up to 1,625 as 17 more people die

BHUBANESWAR: The state’s Covid-19 death toll touched 1,625 on Saturday with 17 more persons succumbing to the virus in the past 24 hours.
While there was no let-up in Covid deaths, the state saw 778 fresh cases being detected on Saturday. This took the tally of Covid-19 cases in the state to 3,13,323.
Among the deceased, five were from Sundargarh, three from Keonjhar, two from Ganjam and one each from Khurda, Mayurbhanj, Puri, Deogarh and Jagatsinghpur. Of the people who have succumbed to the Covid-19 virus so far, 53 have died due to pre-existing ailments, official sources said.
Of the fresh cases, 446 were from quarantine while 332 got infected through local transmission. Angul district recorded the highest number of 68 new cases followed by Sundargarh (64) and Khurda and Balasore (61 each).
The number of new Covid-19 cases continued to decrease in the capital city. Bhubaneswar saw only 46 cases in the past 24 hours, of which 36 were local cases and 10 from quarantine. In Cuttack city, 24 Covid-19 cases were detected in the past 24 hours, including 10 local cases.
Although the state government, doctors and experts have been warning people to wear masks and follow social distancing norms, residents have become increasingly lax about following the rules.
As many as 1,011 Covid patients were discharged on Saturday. Of them, 138 were from Angul, 114 from Khurda, 81 from Balangir, 78 from Cuttack and 76 were from Mayurbhanj.
