SCB Cuttack resumes kidney transplant after three months’ break

BHUBANESWAR: More than three months after it had stopped the kidney transplant during the on-going pandemic, the SCB Medical College and Hospital on Saturday resumed the transplant.
A 34-year-old man from Bhardak underwent the transplant. His mother (57) donated one of her kidneys.
Datteswar Hota, the transplant surgeon who is also principal of the medical college, said there was enhanced care in view of the pandemic. “The donor and recipient were tested for Covid-19 and their results came negative. All the healthcare professionals involved were wearing PPEs and face shields during the surgery,” Hota said.
Doctors and nurses attending the patient and donor are not going to other areas of patient care as a measure of extra precaution to prevent possible viral infection. Both the donor and the recipients are doing fine, he said.
The hospital had stopped the transplant process apprehending spread of infections till national organ and tissue transplant organization (NOTTO) came out with fresh guidelines recently.
SCB is the only hospital in the government sector doing kidney transplant in Odisha. The hospital has so far done 200 transplants since it began the transplant programme in March 2012.
The last transplant was done before this in the hospital on March 16, days before the lockdown. At least seven patients are waiting for the transplant in the hospital.
