11,059 infections make Odisha 8th among states with over 1 lakh active cases

BHUBANESWAR: The state’s cumulative Covid-19 count crossed seven lakh on Monday with the detection of 11,059 fresh cases. For the first time ever, Cuttack took the top spot in the single-day spike, leaving neighbouring Khurda district behind.
While Khurda reported 1,010 cases, around 900 less than a day earlier, Cuttack added 1,133 new infections. Cuttack has been reporting cases in four digits for the past few days. While the active cases in Cuttack district are inching close to 10,000, Cuttack city’s share is a little more than 5,000. While Cuttack city and the rest of Cuttack district have been witnessing an almost equal share of the daily Covid load, the bulk of the cases in Khurda is being reported from Bhubaneswar.
Ajay Parida, director, Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) said, “The Cuttack-Jagatsinghpur-Jajpur cluster is now witnessing an aggressive surge like many western districts in close proximity, which reported huge number of cases at the same time. For the first time, Khurda’s daily infection count has come down. The cases in northern Odisha have also come down. Now, we will have to wait for the aggressive surge in coastal Odisha to calm down.”
Odisha is now eighth among states in terms of the active Covid caseload, which is 1,11,262. The state also reported 32 Covid deaths, the highest so far.
