Active Covid cases in state cross 35k, but ‘O’ effect low
Bhubaneswar: Though Omicron (B.1.1.529) is being blamed for the ongoing spurt in Covid cases in the world, in Odisha it still accounts for only around one-fourth of total cases, the latest analysis by the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) here revealed. The report comes on a day when active positive cases in the state crossed 35,000 for the first time in six months on the back of 8,778 more testing positive.
The ILS analysed genomes of 263 samples of those who had tested positive for Covid between December 29 and January 8. “The results on Wednesday show 67 of them were positive for Omicron while the rest had Delta,” ILS director Ajay Parida said.
The samples were from people in the community and not those who had recently returned from abroad. The total Omicron confirmed cases in Odisha rose to 170. Earlier, when the spread of Covid was not so rapid, the percentage was far less (below 10%) as 103 were positive for Omicron from among 1100 samples tested.
