Bhubaneswar civic body to set up facilities to reduce solid waste dumping

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday decided to set up 14 more material recovery facilities in the capital city to process dry solid waste. At present four such facilities are operational and construction of six is under way.
These facilities are being established to stop the daily transportation of waste to the dumping yard at Daruthenga in a phased manner. The facilities are being set up near micro composting centres, where wet waste is reduced to compost.
BMC sources said out of the 24 material recovery facilities, 10 will come up in the north zone and seven each will be constructed in the southwest and southeast zones. Each plant will have a shredder, a napkin incinerator and a large weighing machine.
It has been decided that sanitation workers, who have been selected from rag-pickers, will be engaged in segregation of waste at the plants. They will separate plastic, metals, cardboard and papers from the waste. “After segregation, the waste will be processed and sent to recyclers, who have been authorised by the BMC,” said Suvendu Sahu, dy commissioner (sanitation).
