Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation move lessens trash load at city dump yard
BHUBANESWAR: The garbage load at the Daruthenga dump yard has been reduced by 30 per cent with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) operationalising 23 micro composting centres (MCC) where waste is turned into manure.
Since Daruthenga needs to be free from waste dump on a daily basis as per a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order, the BMC is trying to reduce waste transportation to the site in phased manner. It is activating the MCC so that bulk of waste generated daily can be processed in the MCC.
“The BMC has planned to construct altogether 43 MCCs, of which, 23 are functioning. These centres can process 150 metric tonnes of both dry and wet waste daily. The waste load at Daruthenga is reducing gradually. Although we haven’t set any deadline for all the MCCs to be operational in order to clear the entire waste load at Daruthenga, we are trying to expedite the construction of the remaining MCCs,” said BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Suvendu Sahu.
He added the heap of garbage dumped so far at Daruthenga will be reclaimed through bio-mining process and the land will regain its original shape.
Millions of tonnes of waste dumped at the yard will be exhausted by carrying out bio-mining – a method to extract plastic and garbage other than municipal solid waste. The BMC has been dumping waste at Daruthenga since 2008.
The civic body said the move is aimed at clearing the legacy waste (old waste), generated by cities for years together.
As the NGT in 2018 had asked all the civic bodies across the country to clear waste from all urban areas, the Centre had asked the states to initiate steps in this regard.
Bio-mining of waste will help segregate different types of waste. While the household waste once separated will be processed to make on-site compost, the hard materials, such as metals and plastic, will be extracted to recycle them.
Daruthenga villagers since 2008 have been opposing the BMC’s move of dumping waste at a site close to the village.
