Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation thanks city residents for segregating waste at source
BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday pasted ‘Thank You’ stickers in front of more than 600 houses in the city appreciating their steps of segregating wastes before handing over the garbage to sanitation workers.
On the first day of the drive, the BMC pasted these stickers in 600 houses, 200 in each of the three zones, as part of citizen connect initiative meant to encourage people to segregate waste at their homes.
This drive was conducted at Badagada Brit colony, near Police Station under South East zone, Soubhagya Nagar Bank colony under South West zone and at Gajapati Nagar under ward no-12 under North Zone.
Three types of stickers have been developed by the urban local body that distinguish households on the basis of giving segregated waste to Safaigadi of the BMC.
Families giving segregated waste were thanked with a green sticker pasted in front of the house. The civic body put orange stickers on the houses for not giving mixed waste and requested the residents to segregate the waste at the source.
Some families, who do not give waste and throw it outside, were appealed to deposit their waste in a segregated manner to the sanitation workers collecting garbage during morning time. The BMC will put red colour stickers at their doorsteps, official sources.
There are 23 micro composting centres (MCCs) covering around 32 wards of the BMC. The wet waste collected from houses are being used to create composts in these MCCs. There is a plan to increase the number of MCCs to 41. After this, all wards of the civic body will be covered under this initiative.
The BMC has asked the city residents to segregate dry waste and wet waste at their homes. The wet waste will be taken to the MCCs and dry waste will be processed at the material recovery facilities (MRFs). The city has 24 MRFs, but eight of these facilities are functioning.
