Cops to crack down on drink driving

BHUBANESWAR: With Covid-19 situation improving and vaccination set to kick-start from Saturday, the state government has decided to resume the crackdown on drunk drivers ahead of the road safety month starting January 18.
Apprehending the transmission of Covid-19 virus by use of alcohol breathalyser, the government had temporarily stopped its use since March 17.
Resumption of the detection of drink driving cases by the use of alcohol breathalyser was discussed at a high-level meeting here on Friday. Officers of transport department, police, works department and NHAI were present at the meeting and finalised the preparations for the forthcoming road safety month.
“We will intensify the enforcement drive against people driving under the influence of alcohol. The amended motor vehicles Act has a provision of imposing hefty Rs 10,000 fine and arrest for drink driving. Driving licences of the offenders will be suspended for three months,” state transport commissioner Sanjeeb Panda said.
