Despite record spike, recoveries exceed fresh Covid cases in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha on Saturday saw a record number of positive cases as well as recoveries. While 4,356 persons tested positive for the virus, 4,761 patients recovered in the past 24 hours.
The virus count in the state mounted to 2,05,452, while the number of cured patients increased to 1,70,193. Sixteen more died raising the virus toll to 783. The active cases in the state stand at 34,423.
Health minister Naba Kishore Das said the recoveries have exceeded the new infections for the second day in a row. “It is a relief. Our doctors and healthcare workers’ commitment and the government’s strategy are working. I hope the situation continues to remain on the path of further improvement,” he added.
Notably, 4,388 patients recovered on Saturday as compared to 4,208 persons testing positive. The state’s recovery percentage has gone up to 82%.
Khurda district, which accounts for the highest number of infections — 35,080 — saw a one-day high of 902 cases and also recoveries of 1,173 patients. In Bhubaneswar, 319 tested positive and 353 got cured. More than 50% of the positive cases in Khurda district — 18,318 of the 35,080 total cases — got reported in September alone. Fifteen of the 30 districts reported more than 100 new cases each.
The average deaths per day have gone up to 15 in the past four days as compared to 10 deaths a day previously. The new deaths include four from Khurda, three each from Puri and Koraput and one each from Balasore, Balangir, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur and Mayurbhanj. Additional chief secretary (health) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said, “It’s not a matter of statistics; our machinery has been leaving no stone unturned to provide the best possible care to the patients.”
