DNA report confirms body found in pit was Mamita Meher’s

BHUBANESWAR: The DNA report on Monday confirmed that the pieces of bones retrieved from the pit were that of Mamita Meher, former principal of Sunshine English Medium School in Kalahandi, who was killed and then the body was set on fire before it was buried to destroy evidence. The body parts matched the blood samples of her parents.
The DNA report had made it clear the body was that of Mamita. The prime accused in the case and founder of the school, Gobinda Sahu, had confessed before the police that he had killed Mamita in his car and then burnt and buried the body to destroy evidence.
Police had come under attack with opposition parties calling investigation shoddy. But the DNA report makes the case stronger. “It will serve as a strong evidence to ensure conviction of the accused who had tried his best to destroy evidence. The report will be submitted in the court soon,” said a senior police officer.
Police claimed they went ahead with the arrest of Gobinda and his aide Radhe and carried on investigation in the case based on circumstantial evidence, confession statement of the accused, account of eye-witnesses, incriminating material retrieved from the car, CCTV footage and most importantly, the body parts dug up from the pit.
The state forensic science laboratory (SFSL) had received the bones (retrieved from the pit) and the blood samples of Mamita’s parents on October 23. Police had sent 70 varieties of exhibits to the SFSL.
According to the police, Gobinda had allegedly killed Mamita on October 8 as she had come to know about his extra-marital affair with a girl. Mamita, principal of the school, had no knowledge what was going on in Gobinda’s mind when she got into his car at Chandotara to go to Mahaling, where the school is located. She was allegedly strangulated in the car on way to Mahaling.
