Enforcement teams to ensure Bhubaneswar’s safety
BHUBANESWAR: The capital city authorities activated enforcement squads to check mask violators in view of detection of the Omicron variant of coronavirus in three countries.
Also, it has set up testing kiosks at the Biju Patnaik International Airport.
While rest of Odisha is more or less relieved as far as Covid-19 caseload is concerned, the capital city is still grappling with daily infection count.
Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) deputy commissioner Suvendu Sahu the civic body has set up testing kiosks at the city airport.
The kiosks had been removed long ago after cases began to fall in other parts of the country and no new variant threat loomed further.
“Passengers with travel history to the affected foreign countries will be asked for on-the-spot testing. In case a passenger tests positive for Covid-19, he or she will be sent to isolation and the swab sample will be sent for genome sequencing,” Sahu added.
“We have six enforcement squads. The squad members have been asked to pull up their socks to launch surprise checks at crowded places. Mask norm will also be followed strictly. All the squads, apart from doing their routine enforcement, will carry out Covid-19 vigilance regularly,” he said.
The city is still reporting around 100 new cases daily despite nearly 100 per cent vaccination. Till Saturday, it had 1,369 active cases with the cumulative infections crossing 12 lakh mark.
Bijay Mohapatra, director, health services said enforcement apart, people should understand that wearing mask is enough to keep the virus at bay.
“We have passed 20 months amid the pandemic. It is a pandemic and the virus is going to stay in different forms. It is in our hands to stay away from contracting it. Those vaccinated also need to maintain Covid-appropriate behaviour, he said urging people to supplement government effort to beat the virus spread,” Mohapatra added.
