KENDRAPADA: The district administration is set to start guava farming on 500 acres of land in a village under the mineral-rich Sukinda block in Jajpur district. The initiative, which has been taken up under the District Mineral Fund (DMF) on a pilot basis, aims to provide a source of livelihood to the villagers.
Sukinda MLA Pritiranjan Ghadei on Monday laid the foundation for the project by planting a tree during a function at Damodarpur in the presence of officials.
“The land identified for the purpose is situated at Damodarpur village near the district horticulture office. Around 22 varieties of two lakh guava saplings will be grown there soon. We will spend around Rs10 crore out of the Rs 1,170 crore DMF for the project. The agro-climatic conditions of the hilly terrain of Sukinda make it conducive for guava farming,” Kumar Subhashis, the team leader of DMF in Jajpur, said.
MLA Ghadei said the vast mineral wealth of Sukinda and Danagadi blocks in the district is well known. “The state exports minerals from Sukinda. Soon, it will also start exporting the guavas grown here,” he added.
