Loss in stock market drives Bhubaneswar man to kill wife, son

BHUBANESWAR: Unable to cope with frustration over job loss during the Covid-induced lockdown and heavy losses in the share market, a man allegedly strangled his wife and son to death in Kalinga Vihar area under Tamando police limits here on Tuesday.
The police arrested the accused Abanti Bijay Mangaraj (40), who also attempted to commit suicide by slashing his left wrist. Though he was admitted to hospital, his condition is safe, police said. Bodies of Mangaraj’s wife Swarnalata (35) and son Jitu (10) were recovered from their home that they had taken on rent recently.
“Mangaraj was in a deep financial crisis. We heard he used to work as a salesman in a private company before he was retrenched during lockdown this year. This angle is being verified. He tried his luck in investment in the share market. But incurred heavy losses,” deputy commissioner of police Uma Shankar Dash said.
Police said his frustration adversely impacted his personal life. He often vented his ire on his wife and son, leading to frequent altercation between the couple. The husband and wife picked up a quarrel on Monday night.
“Mangaraj mixed sleeping pills in the food of his wife and son on Monday night. Early morning, he strangled them to death in their sleep. He attempted to commit suicide by slashing his wrist and failed. Later he fled home before being rounded up by the police,” Dash said. Police sources said Mangaraj had called up his brother-in-law and informed him about his offence.
