Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik call to police to improve conviction rate
BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday expressed his displeasure on the poor conviction rate of the state police.
Addressing the valedictory session of the 63rd senior police officers’ conference virtually, Naveen asked the police to ensure safety of women and children in the state. “Low conviction rate continues to be an area of concern. All possible steps should be taken to enhance conviction rate by using modern technology during the investigation. Crimes against women and children should always be a focus area. Such complaints should be attended immediately with empathy,” Naveen said.
The chief minister praised the state police for ensuring peace, and law and order in 2021. “My government is committed to maintain peace and harmony in the state. I expect all of you to lead by personal example and provide quality leadership. I also expect you to be caring and very sensitive to the victims and their families,” he said.
Considering the shortage of houses for police personnel, the chief minister said the government would provide Rs 1,000 crore for the next five years for construction of buildings with a special emphasis on housing for cops.
Naveen praised the special task force (STF) for effectively curbing drug menace and wildlife crime in the state. “I was told that a record quantity of narcotics have been seized. Special drives against drugs should continue. A special narcotics unit has been created in the STF. Now more emphasis should be given on curbing narcotic drugs in urban areas,” he said.
The chief minister also lauded the state police for bringing left-wing extremism (LWE) under control.
“Good feedback has been received under Mo Sarkar regarding the Odisha police. Under the 5T charter, certain good initiatives like strengthening of the civil police, fast processing of passport verification, timely promotion of police personnel and e-FIR in theft cases have been taken up,” Naveen said.
