Odisha man airlifted for treatment with crowdfunding dies in Chennai
BHUBANESWAR/BERHAMPUR: Amrit Pradhan, the 25-year-old from Berhampur, who almost managed to beat Covid, Sepsis and lungs failure with lungs transplant after being airlifted from Bhubaneswar, died in a Chennai hospital on Tuesday night.
This engineering graduate, a resident of silk city’s Basudev Nagar, had undergone successful lung transplantation at the hospital on October 23, while being under advanced extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support.
Four days ago, suddenly his condition deteriorated and he suffered a heart attack. A team of doctors had tried to save him, but he lost the long battle against the health complications.
He was infected with the Covid-19 in the last week of April. While all his family members had recovered from the disease, his health deteriorated. He was rushed to the AIIMS Bhubaneswar for treatment on May 2. After assessing his critical condition, the doctors had told the family members about the need of ECMO support and lung transplantation.
They were requiring around Rs 1.2 crore for Amrit’s treatment. Not losing hope, the family tried to raise funds and put appeals in crowdfunding online platform for medical needs, ‘Milaap’ and could raise more than half the amount.
While raising funds, the family was also in touch with Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. After their confirmation, Amrit was airlifted from Bhubaneswar. The Commissionerate Police had made a green corridor from AIIMS to Biju Patnaik International Airport, around 12 km, making his airlifting hassle-free on June 3.
“Despite getting support from several people and efforts of the doctors, he could not be saved,” said the deceased’s sister Manisha Pradhan, who had raised funds through crowdfunding for treatment of her brother.
