Odisha may receive moderate rainfall over next 3 days: IMD

BHUBANESWAR: A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday and might trigger widespread rainfall in the state for three days, the latest forecast from the IMD said on Wednesday.
The state government, in the wake of the fresh forecast, has asked all district collectors to remain alert. “Situation may be closely monitored. The district administration should be on alert and ready to meet any eventuality,” Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) P K Jena said in his letter to the collectors.
Jena’s letter further stated that their office might be apprised from time to time on appropriate actions.
A senior government official said the alert assumed significance as the state witnessed a flood-like situation due to incessant rain triggered by a low pressure trough last month.
H R Biswas, director of the regional IMD centre, said rainfall activities would increase in south interior pockets on Sunday and would thereafter continue across the state at least for three days. “There are also chances of heavy rain at isolated places,” he added.
Fishermen have been advised to return to the coast by Sunday.
Of the total 30 districts, four in the state faced a rain deficit of 20% or above. Those districts are Khurda, Gajapati, Puri and Balasore.
For Thursday, the forecast said light to moderate rain or thundershowers might occur at many places over the state. Padmapur in Rayagada district received the highest rainfall of 70 mm till Wednesday morning.
