Odisha: New varsity campus named Manikya Vihar

BHUBANESWAR: The first syndicate meeting of the newly established Kalahandi University, Bhawanipatna, has decided to name the campus as Manikya Vihar.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) had granted recognition to the varsity on August 18. The institution passed several proposals during the first syndicate meeting on Monday, including the campus name.
Sources said the nomenclature was derived from the name of Maa Manikeswari, tutelary goddess of Kalahandi. This region of the state is famous for gemstones, including ruby, which is called Manikya in Odia.
Earlier, the campus of premier Utkal University was named as Vani Vihar. In a similar fashion, Berhampur University was named as Bhanja Vihar, Sambalpur University as Jyoti Vihar and Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, as Vyasa Vihar.
The Kalahandi varsity syndicate has also named one of the girls’ hostels after river Udanti which flows through the district. Many hostels of state public universities have been named after different rivers.
