Odisha: No Omicron variant found in 246 samples tested, Delta present
BHUBANESWAR: In a huge relief, all 246 samples collected and sent to the Insacog laboratory, Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), between November 29 and December 5 for genome sequencing have returned negative for Omicron, but showed the presence of the Delta variant. Also, the genomic study of the samples of four foreign returnees were negative for Omicron.
“All samples of Covid positive persons that were sent to us ever since the Omicron alert was issued, were put through genomic study and none revealed the Omicron variant. We are also conducting genome sequencing of samples being sent from different districts on a daily basis,” said Ajay Parida, ILS director.
On Thursday and Friday, no sample for genome sequencing has been sent to the Insacog laboratory by the district administrations. “The samples that are sent for genomic study are compiled by the district administration. We haven’t recorded any sample coming to ILS. They must have been preserved and will come on Saturday,” said Niranjan Mishra, director, public health.
The health authorities said they have so far been able to find the database of 6,133 foreign returnees, who have filed self-declaration form in Air Subidha portal of their return to India. Out of 6,133, the government has segregated 1,303 returnees coming from at-risk countries. “Out of total 6,133 foreign returnees, we have recorded arrival of 3,324 persons and all are under surveillance. We can track those who arrive. We will have compiled data of persons tracked once we get it from the districts,” said Bijay Mohapatra, director, health services.
The at-risk countries that the Centre has identified are European countries, South Africa, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Israel.
