BHUBANESWAR: From enforcing the lockdown to distributing free food, oximeters and medicines among the poor and needy besides maintaining law and order, the Odisha Police have not shied away from responding to the call of duty in this hour of crisis.
To ensure that the poor and destitute do not go hungry during the lockdown, they have joined hands with a number of social organisations and philanthropists and are providing food, free of cost. Apart from this, the police have been distributing biscuits, bread, banana and dry food among the poor in many districts.
“We have started the home delivery of medicines for citizens in the Jajpur Town police station area. The medicines will be delivered at their doorsteps within 24 hours of placing the request. Payment should be made on receiving medicines. People can contact us on 9556440191,” Jajpur SP Rahul P R said. He added that at least 15 persons have already benefited from the service in the last 24 hours.
The district police chief said some cops have also been providing food and other essentials like grocery and medicines to those in need from their own pockets.
The Puri police have launched a 24×7 helpline for senior citizens. “Those who are staying alone can call 6370972100 in case of any exigency. Our police personnel will try and reach them quickly,” Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh assured.
The commissionerate police said they are trying their best to provide police-related services at people’s doorsteps. “We have been receiving complaints from their homes as they cannot move out during the lockdown. Besides, our personnel have been distributing dry food and medicines among the poor,” deputy commissioner of police Uma Shankar Dash said.
During the Covid-induced lockdown and shutdown last year, the police had also shown its humane face and come to the rescue of a large number of stranded migrant labourers. Altogether 24,754 stranded migrant labourers were given free food and sent back to their homes in different states in 529 vehicles.
