Odisha: Rs 35,000 in banned notes recovered from govt engineer
BHUBANESWAR: Five years after they ceased to become legal tender, junked Rs 500 notes with a face value of Rs 35,000 were seized by Odisha vigilance from the house of a government engineer in Nayagarh on Thursday.
The anti-corruption wing stumbled upon the demonetised notes while conducting a raid in the house of Rusinath Baral, an assistant executive engineer (RD division) of Ranpur in Nayagarh district following allegation that he had amassed disproportionate assets.
“When we were searching his residence, we found the banned Rs 500 notes worth Rs 35,000 under a cushion. We strongly suspect it was black money,” a vigilance officer said.
Further search led to recovery of assets worth about Rs 2.51 crore owned by Baral and his kin. A 3-storey building and two plots in Bhubaneswar, a single storey house and seven plots in Dhenkanal district were found in their names. Baral has been detained.
