Plan to reduce poverty to 10% in next 5 yrs: Naveen Patnaik
BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Sunday announced his government’s plan to bring down poverty in the state to 10% in the next five years. Addressing party workers across the state through video-conference, marking the 25th foundation day of the BJD, Naveen termed Odisha a leading state in terms of reducing poverty.
“We have reduced poverty from 63% to 29% in recent years. Nearly 80 lakh people have been lifted above the poverty line. With your cooperation, Odisha will create history by bringing down poverty to 10%. Our government will take whatever steps required to achieve this,” said Naveen.
The Odisha Economic Survey 2020-21 said poverty level in the state had gone down from 57.20% in 2004-05 to 32.6% in 2011-12, a reduction of 24.6%. Official sources said the state plans to come up with more social welfare programmes and infrastructure development initiatives to uplift the living standard of people, which will help in poverty reduction.
Naveen, on the occasion, presented a comparative picture of Odisha before the BJD assumed power in March 2000 and the present scenario. He said the state has now been progressing with a new identity in all sectors – be it education, sports, health and agriculture.
To substantiate his claim, he highlighted the state’s achievement as a model in disaster management, being the third largest contributor to the country’s public distribution system (PDS) pool, welfare of vulnerable sections and empowerment of rural women under Mission Shakti and the demand for passage of women’s reservation bill.
Naveen also spoke about how Odisha helped provide life saving oxygen during the second wave of Covid-19, gave universal free treatment to Covid patients, being the preferred investment destination that attracted nearly 4 lakh investments during the pandemic and transformed schools under the 5T initiative.
“The party that was constituted on December 26, 1997 based on the ideology of legendary leader and former chief minister Biju Patnaik, has now become a social movement and the hallmark of the trust of people from the state,” Naveen said. “The people of Odisha are our boss. We don’t have any other boss in Delhi. Whatever we are doing is meant for the people of Odisha and to ensure their rights to them. We are only answerable to the people of the state,” he added.
Crediting the people of Odisha and lakhs of party workers for the party’s success over the years, he said it will serve the people for hundreds of years with their blessings.
