Sarpanch, accused thief and 8-year-old boy among 91 tested Covid-19 positive in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha recorded as many as 91 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Sunday, pushing the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 828. With one more Covid-19 death, the state has witnessed total four coronavirus-related deaths. In addition, 24 patients have been treated for the infection and recovered on Sunday taking the total number of recovered cases to 220 in the state so far.
Of the total 91 positive cases reported on Sunday included one sarpanch, three locals and 87 others who are staying from different quarantine centres. The 87 migrant workers returned from other cities and states like Surat and Ahmadabad, West Bengal, Telangana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, informed health and family welfare department.
While a sarpanch was being contracted the disease has raised fear among the people because sarpanchs have been looking after the arrangements in quarantine centres across the state, where migrant labourers coming from different states are being kept in 28 days quarantine.
The other three persons who got infected through local contacts are each one from Puri, Khurda and Balasore districts including an inmate of Puri jail, who was arrested on the charges of robbery on Friday also tested positive. Besides, an eight-year-old boy without any travel history got contracted with the infection in Khurda has become a cause of concern. “We are tracking the travel history and contacts of all positive patients,” said a health department official.
With 15 new cases on Sunday Ganjam district has the highest number of cases of 292, which were detected in a span of 16 days. Among other districts Bhadrak added 28 new cases, Balasore 17, Cuttack 12, Puri 7, Keonjhar 4, Khurda 3, Balangir 2 and each one in Kendrapada, Sundargarh and Sambalpur. With an 18-year-old Ahmadabad returned Samabalpur reported its maiden case on Sunday taking the number of affected districts to 21.
Meanwhile, Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER), Berhampur has been accorded necessary approval by AIIMS, Bhubaneswar for conducting Covid-19 testing.
As many as 5,083 Covid-19 samples were tested in different centres including Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar, AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, SCB, Cuttack, MKCG, Berhampur, VIMSAR, Burla, ILS, Bhubaneswar and IGH, Rourkela on Saturday. Cumulative number of samples tested so far is 91,223.
