State government cancels Bolbum on Shravan Mondays

The state government has put a curb on the Bolbum activities this year keeping an eye on the surge in number of Covid-19 patients. On usual days, Bolbum devotees would carry water from rivers and walk for a long stretch to various Shiv temples on every Shravan Monday. In the recent years, it had become a fad, as more people were taking part in this religious activity.

Despite yesterday being the first Monday of the Shravan month, the Odisha government had instructed all district administrations and local authorities to prevent any such religious gatherings. “We have seen how Bolbum devotees carry water and walk miles to pour the water on Lord Shiv. While fetching water and making beelines near the temples, huge congregations were natural. Keeping the current pandemic spread in mind and in an attempt to control it, we have banned the activities this year,” said Pradeep Jena, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC).
Following the government instructions, the Shiv temples in the state were deserted. No shops were seen selling Bolbum items.
