Containment zone crosses 100 as Cov batters capital
Bhubaneswar: The number of the capital’s micro-containment zones has crossed 100 since the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic broke out here. Till Monday, the active case count in Bhubaneswar was 3,325.
The capital, which has been grappling with the impact of the pandemic through all the waves, had never seen such an extent of containment in the previous two waves. The administration in New Delhi had created more than 1,000 containment zones in the second wave.
“Micro-containment is now going to help to contain the further spread of the virus. We have limited curbs as livelihood needs to be given due priority as well. At the personal level, each one of us has to take precaution. We have to follow the behaviour that can save us from contracting the virus’s spread,” said Sanjay Kumar Singh, commissioner, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Singh added that though Bhubaneswar has a floating population, the residents of the capital city constitute the majority of those being infected in the current wave of the pandemic.
Bhubaneswar is the lone city in the state, which has recorded 100 per cent vaccination coverage. But despite that it is the place that is witnessing a huge caseload.
Very early the capital city authorities activated enforcement squads to check mask violators in view of detection of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 virus in the third week of November in three countries. Also, it set up testing kiosks at the Biju Patnaik International Airport.
BMC officials said the daily testing count in the city will increase further. “We will try to maintain 10,000 testing every day and may take it beyond it to screen all the suspected people,” the commissioner added.
