Daylight attack on woman in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: In a brazen incident, two unidentified men allegedly attacked a woman with a sword inside her home in the posh Saheed Nagar area in broad daylight on Wednesday.
Gitanjali Paltasingh (27) is battling for life at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack with family members claiming robbery could be the motive behind the attack.
A profusely bleeding Gitanjali, who sustained serious injuries on her back, shoulders, chest and hands, was first taken to Capital Hospital, where a team of five doctors took at least four hours to administer around 400 stitches to stop the blood flow. She was later shifted to SCB Medical College.
“My wife, mother and our two-year-old boy were at home when the attack happened. I work in a travel agency and was away from home. Around 1 pm, I received a call from my mother that two miscreants had barged into the house and attacked my wife. When I reached home, I found her lying in a pool of blood,” Gitanjali’s husband Susanta Swain said. At the time of the attack, Paltasingh’s mother-in-law had gone to the terrace with her grandchild.
“I strongly suspect robbery was the motive behind the attack on my wife. While she was being taken to the hospital, she told me that two men attacked her with a sword and took some ornaments from home,” Swain said. Though they stay in a three-story building on rent, their neighbours did not get a whiff of the attack.
The shocking incident could not have come at the worst time for the commissionerate police, which observed its 14th Raising Day on Wednesday.
“We are investigating the case from all angles. Though the family members alleged some jewellery was stolen, we found some ornaments lying intact on the bed and in the cupboard. There was no sign of tussle at home. We strongly suspect the motive of the attack could be revenge due to previous enmity. Since the woman’s condition is critical, we could not record her statement,” a senior police officer said. CCTV footage in the locality is being examined.
