Odisha reports 24 more Omicron cases

BHUBANESWAR: The state on Wednesday reported 24 more Omicron cases raising the cumulative count of the new variant to 61. The infected include 19 without any travel history and five returnees from Sweden, France, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Malaysia.
The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) said genome sequencing was done for 218 Covid positive samples. “Some more positive samples of the contacts and foreign returnees are in queue for genome sequencing. We are conducting genome study every day to ascertain the variant so that preventive steps are taken on time to check its spread,” said Ajay Parida, ILS director.
Three persons, who had tested positive for the Omicron variant after their return from Nigeria, have recovered after treatment at the SUM Covid Hospital here, a press release said. Amidst the near panic caused by escalating number of new Covid patients in the state, a woman and her two daughters tested positive for the new variant and got admitted into the SUM Covid Hospital on December 21.
