Monsoon likely to hit Odisha between June 10 and 15: IMD

BHUBANESWAR: The state is likely to witness a normal rainfall during the monsoon this year that will last from June to September, said IMD‘s latest forecast released on Tuesday.
For June, the rainfall is also expected to be above normal at most places, the forecast said. The monsoon is likely to hit Kerala coast around June 3. So it’s arrival in the state is expected between June 11 and 15, the forecast said.
“Of four separate region-wise forecast from the IMD headquarter, Odisha comes under central region, which was expected to receive over 106% monsoon rain,” said director of regional IMD centre H R Biswas. He said arrival of the monsson in the state would be clear once it hits the hit Kerala coast.
He said the state during monsoon receives a normal monsoon rain of 1,150 mm.
Scientist Umashankar Das at the IMD centre said the monsoon usually takes 10 to 14 days time to arrive in Odisha after hitting the Kerala coast.
Referring to the IMD’s forecast, Das said sea surface temperature is very crucial and has a strong influence on monsoon rainfall. “It’s positive side would cause good monsoon rain. The IMD was carefully monitoring evolution of sea surface temperature in both the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean,” he said. Director of centre for environment and climate, Sarat Chandra Sahu said rainfall is influenced by a system of oscillating sea surface temperatures known as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The prediction said IOD may be negative during monsoon season, he said.
